Thanks for your insight. I agree, it seems simple enough. I do think there’s a layer of complication in identifying readers who are returning to comment later, or responding to comments, or otherwise involved in a conversation that turns to multiple visits. It could be attached to cookies or a user profile, or even made to allow bypassing the reading requirement if using a comment permalink… whatever. There’s definitely a way to do it, even if imperfect. But I wonder what I’m missing: if it can be done, and it should be done, why hasn’t it been done?
